Making the world more energy efficient
Energy efficiency will help prevent dangerous climate change – so we’re pushing hard for it.
Did you know that generating energy for electricity is the biggest contributor to the emission of greenhouse gases which cause climate change? It causes 37% of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions? It’s vital that we all use less energy if we’re prevent the average global temperature from rising more than 1.5°C, which would cause an environmental disaster.
Humanity’s energy use needs to start going down within the next 5-7 years to stop climate change spiralling out of control.
Energy-efficient appliances are vital to achieving this goal.
Homes are responsible for 26% of the UK’s CO2 emissions. So improving their energy efficiency is critical tooWe’re also trying to make it easier for homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes. We’ve demonstrated to government that improving the energy efficiency of existing homes can significantly reduce the UK’s carbon emissions; support the UK economy through the provision of new, green jobs; and make it cheaper to implement renewable energy alternatives by reducing energy demand. In 2011, we’ll be campaigning for a strong UK Energy Bill to achieve these ambitions.
The next stage in WWF’s efforts will be a campaign to promote renewable energy. They hope it’ll bring us a step closer to preventing disastrous climate change – before it’s too late.
